La Fábrica de Hielo is an independent cultural space in El Cabanyal, set in an old industrial building near the beach where ice was once made for the fishing trade. The Marina de València handed the building over for a new social use, and the project has been running since around the end of 2015; it celebrated its second anniversary in December 2017. Today it is one of the main meeting points of cultural life in the seaside neighbourhood.
The building keeps its industrial character, with high ceilings, raw walls and a large open hall, plus a bar and a second room, Sala 2, that is used for club nights. It stands at number 37 in the street one block back from the Cabanyal beach promenade, so the sea is only a couple of minutes away. Our listing puts capacity at around 400 people.
The programme is deliberately eclectic. The city's cultural agenda describes a mix of music, dance, circus, literature, cinema, visual arts, architecture and theatre, and over the years it has hosted jazz concerts, classic film cycles, reading clubs, book presentations, writing, yoga and movement workshops, and markets with live music and food trucks. Evenings often bring live bands, from jazz to fusion, as well as electronic DJ sets, and the current agenda also includes stand-up comedy and talks.
The crowd reflects the neighbourhood and its mood: Cabanyal residents, people from the creative and cultural scene, students and many of the international residents who live near the beach. It is a place to sit with a drink, catch a concert or stay for a DJ, not a place to dress up, so casual clothes are the norm. Prices depend on the activity; our listing puts most tickets and drinks in the €5 to €12 range, and details are published on each event page of the venue's website.
On timing: it is closed on Mondays, opens in the late afternoon from Tuesday to Friday and from late morning at weekends, and closes between midnight and around 1:30am depending on the day, so it is somewhere to start or spend an evening rather than a late club. Metro lines 4 and 6 and several bus lines serve the area. Combine a visit with a walk past the tiled façades and modernist houses of El Cabanyal, dinner in one of the neighbourhood's bars or rice restaurants, or a sunset on Las Arenas beach.
