Deseo 54 is the longest-running club of Valencia's LGBTQ+ scene, tucked away on Calle Pepita in Marchalenes, just north of the old Turia riverbed. Local press has described it as the "decana", the senior venue, of the city's gay nightlife, a club that has followed the community's evolution for a quarter of a century. Like most clubs in Valencia it was forced to close during the pandemic, and it is open again with its weekend nights.
The club has room for around 600 people and is built around a large central dance floor, with a VIP area and a light and sound system designed for proper club nights. Recent guides describe two levels with different moods: house downstairs and pop upstairs. Drag shows, go-go dancers and visual performances are part of the identity of the place and help explain why many people come for the show as much as for the music.
Musically, Deseo 54 has long been one of the few city-centre clubs where you could hear electronic music with real bass weight, and house is still the backbone on Saturdays. Upstairs the soundtrack turns to pop and big singalong hits. Throughout the year there are themed nights, and the calendar peaks around Fallas, Pride and other big dates, when special parties such as the Fallas circuit events take over. In summer, Latin and tropical nights and extra Thursday openings have also been part of the programme.
The core crowd is gay men, but over the years the dance floor has opened up to a very mixed public: groups of friends, women, trans people and straight guys who simply like the music. The atmosphere is open and welcoming, and nobody needs to fit a particular image. Dress is casual to smart, and on themed nights a costume or a nod to the theme is part of the fun. The minimum age is 18.
Deseo 54 opens on Friday and Saturday nights, starting late and running into the morning, so there is little point arriving before one; like most Valencia clubs it fills up later. Door entry on a regular weekend is usually around 10 to 18 euros, with special events and festival parties costing more, and flyers or lists sometimes give cheaper or free entry early. Check the club's Instagram for the current programme, as themed nights change from week to week. Upcoming nights are listed on this page.
